Summary

As you may have guessed, I decided that I just needed to finish this Web 2.0 stuff. I hope you passed me. I use the stuff that I find useful (duh), and don't use the other. Now that I finally use the Google feed reader, I see how handy it is. The other tools I use regularly are Flickr and Googledocs. I find that Twitter and Facebook take up too much of my time, though I do check them daily -- not to add anything but to keep track of my children and the ducks. Good enough?

Wiki

I always forget that the PALS Wiki is there. It does have some useful information. I enjoyed the Princeton Book Review but noticed that it's not an active Wiki -- they just used it during their summer program 2006. I found some stuff that could be useful on the Library Best Practices wiki, especially regarding staff training. It was frustrating when I hit a couple of dead links, however.

Finding new feeds

Of the search tools you mentioned, I found the Google Reader one the easiest, though I didn't have any trouble finding something of interest using each of them. I found blogs on tiny houses, bonsai trees and strawberries. I just get overwhelmed by the volume.

Discovering feeds on our catalog and website

This was no discovery to me since I knew they were there. I think there are plenty of patrons who would read feeds on the catalog and/or website but not necessarily set up their own feed reader (I know I did this for a while). I imagine the feeds for new movies, books and programs will be the most popular.

Google Reader

I have a Google Reader account and am following mostly local blogs and NY Times feeds on new books. Here's a little something I got off a friend's blog.

Suffolk Wave

I downloaded and listened to half a minute of the Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World. I had no problem figuring out how to select and "check out" the title. Just totally ignored the fact that I had to download the appropriate software first. After Nick pointed that out to me, it was fine. I plan to transfer it to my iPhone, but I have to change some setting in iTunes first. I'll do that later.

Flickr

I use Flickr all the time with my parents and brothers. We're scattered all over the world, and Flickr is the tool we use to share photos of our families with each other. We also enjoy having inane conversations regarding these photos. Here is an example:

I think this means I don't have to answer the questions you want me to. Or add any new books. I have enough books in my library already. Most of them I hardly remember. Boy, am I losing my memory!

This is something I hadn't explored at all before. I think I may find this quite useful. Haven't signed in for a personal account, but I definitely will. Jacque, you will be able to tell which site I bookmarked on the MMSCL test site, and you will be annoyed.

MySpace and Facebook comments

Library's Facebook account has 117 fans today. I'm already a fan of the library's facebook account. I'm pretty sure. Let me check. No, I don't have to check. I remember doing it now. Found the other libraries down the page under favorite pages. I think the page should feature photos of all the library staff (wouldn't that go over well?"

Notice I'm one of the few friends the general library MySpace page has. I need to change that photo. Not too professional. Teen's page doesn't have any more friends though. So more people are hitting the library on Facebook than on MySpace? Or just no one on MySpace wants to be the library's friend.

I guess I like Facebook a little better, but that's probably just because I'm more familiar with it. I'm not a big user, however. I was gung-ho when I first signed up, but find it just takes up too much time. If we could get our patrons to friend us, the status line on Facebook would be an easy way to keep them up-to-date with things happening at the library.

Twittering

I already had my own twitter account, but when I went to sign in, I couldn't remember my name or password. What a surprise! So now I'm waiting for an email that will allow me to reset my password so I can start twittering again.

Mission accomplished

I did it. Quietly, tersely and unobtrusively, as promised.
